As a Nationally Accredited Figure Photographer, I share my passion for photographing the nude and specific lighting, posing, and retouching techniques that you can use in your own photography.  This is one of my favourite workshops to offer for two very specific reasons.

Aura McKay, photographer of reclining nude female figure on chaise lounge.

First, photographing the figure has always inspired me. From the beginning of my photography career and education, I have been dedicated to the idea that photographing people is a collaborative process and find that the clients and figure models I work with are incredible in their willingness to participate.

Second, I really believe that learning to ‘see’ the figure, noticing how a slight shift in body weight or change in perspective can affect expression and mood, is the best foundation for other people and portrait photography. Master the posing and composition of the body before you add in expressions and portrait lighting styles.

I love the exploration of shape and form to create a balance of space and subject, using light to build or reduce volume, using environment and props to establish narrative. This workshop starts with an discussion on different areas and themes in Figure & Nude photography, using examples from my own work, inspiration images that you bring in and iconic images from some of the great photographers in this genre.

Learning to see the figure is often easier without the camera and all the image capturing technical decisions.  Our first step is using our eyes and a pencil.  Clint Morris, Life Drawing Instructor, walks us patiently through the elements of drawing a figure and breaking down proportions and negative space.  You will be amazed at how simple it is once you have been taught the technique!  Students always say that this is one of the most valuable parts of the workshop.

We have two shooting sessions in the studio with professional lighting and models.  Our first session focuses on the classic figure study, nude as a landscape or shape and honing our ‘seeing’ skill through posing techniques.  Our goal is the nude as an archetype or for the pure aesthetics of the image.  After a review and critique, we have our second studio session.

This time our models will have more individual character and you are invited to bring props to explore the idea of intimate portraiture and the nude as a narrative.
